The Brooke County Sheriff's office is the official point of contact for concealed pistol and revolver license applications in Brooke County. West Virginia law requires every county sheriff to accept and process concealed carry permit applications from county residents.

Application hours: - Tuesdays and Thursdays - 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Call ahead. Appointments are required—don't walk in without scheduling first.

The sheriff conducts a nationwide criminal background check including:
No permit is issued unless the background check shows you're legally allowed to possess a firearm under state and federal law (18 U.S.C. §922(g) or (n)).
Your license includes: - Your full name and address - Your signature (signed in pen and ink) - Sheriff's signature and county seal - Wallet-sized duplicate card matching state ID standards (includes photograph as of July 1, 2017+) - Valid throughout West Virginia for 5 years - Allows you to carry concealed pistols or revolvers on any state lands or waters
If denied, the sheriff must state specific reasons in writing. You have 30 days to file a petition in circuit court for review. The court will determine if you meet the legal criteria. You can represent yourself or hire counsel (public counsel not provided). If you win on appeal, you may recover reasonable attorney fees and court costs.
All application information is confidential. Sheriffs cannot disclose applicant details except to: - Law enforcement (to verify license validity, assist criminal investigation, or for lawful law enforcement purposes)
Violating confidentiality is a misdemeanor ($50-$200 fine per offense).
Once issued, your concealed carry license authorizes you to carry a concealed pistol or revolver throughout West Virginia. The permit is valid for 5 years and can be renewed. Renewal applicants don't need to retake the training requirement—just apply and pay fees again.
Honorably retired law enforcement: You're exempt from all fees if you retired from WV-governed agencies under WV Code §7-14, §8-14, §15-2, or §20-7. All other requirements still apply.
