Full description and what we offer
Erick Mares started guiding in 1994 right after high school and launched High Pine Outfitters in 2005. He lives in Glenrock, Wyoming with his wife Kenzie (a veterinarian) and their two daughters. That real-world experience—three decades of it—shows in how the operation runs.
Hunts take place on private property across two established camps in the Laramie Range, adjacent to Medicine Bow National Forest, and the northeastern Wyoming plains. The operation controls access to over 50,000 acres with no wolves, grizzlies, or horses—meaning you hunt without that pressure and can focus on calling in bulls.
Elk hunts run on foot with side-by-side transport from camp to a designated parking area on the mountain. Terrain varies from rolling hills to steep rock. The outfit hunts to your physical ability but expects you to be comfortable walking uneven ground with a pack and rifle.
Non-resident Wyoming elk tags? In 2022, Area 7 required 13 preference points for 100% draw. Wyoming also holds a random draw portion—the outfit mentions clients draw on random draws regularly. Call to discuss your point strategy.
Erick Mares (Outfitter) Owner and primary guide. Licensed guide BG141. Has been working with clients since 1994 and built the entire operation based on making sure hunts are successful and friendships develop.
Guide Staff Damon, Ethan, Lane, Jared, Curtis, Matt—a rotation of experienced guides who work the camps throughout the season.
Stephanie Gies (Camp Cook) Cooks for the outfit since 2018. Works in the oil industry in Douglas and cooks part-time. Clients consistently mention her food as a highlight—breakfast burritos, sandwiches for lunch, multi-course dinners. She stays involved in camp logistics and helps with whatever the hunt requires.
One multi-day testimonial from a father-and-son archery hunt (September 2021) gives real detail:
"Erick called my bull in to about 25 yards on the first morning. About a 310-320 class beautiful bull. First archery bull ever." The hunter took the bull with a crossbow and Erick caped and cleaned it for display.
On day three, weather turned cold and rainy with snow. They moved to a different ranch area and found a dozen bulls bugling. On the final day, they stalked a 360-class bull (estimated) for 1.5 hours, worked downwind, and the bull came within 30 yards. The 79-year-old dad, hunting with a crossbow, made a perfect 30-yard shot. Erick handled field care completely.
The testimonial emphasizes: cabin accommodations with separate rooms and comfortable beds, high-quality food that leaves hunters gaining weight, and guides who genuinely adjust pacing and tactics based on hunter ability.
