Fine Firearms handles California's complex regulations:
Customers must pass a safe handling demonstration (load, unload, lock, unlock, handle safely) before picking up any firearm.
Firearm purchases require: - Valid California Real ID or government-issued ID with current address - FSC (Firearm Safety Certificate) or military/peace officer exemption - Proof of California residency - 10-day waiting period and background check - Thumbprint at point of sale
Age restrictions: - Handguns: 21+ only - Long guns: 18+ (with hunting license or military discharge) - Handgun ammo: 21+ - Rifle/shotgun ammo: 18+
- •Locked device requirement: Federal law requires all handgun transfers include a locking device; California and San Diego municipal code require locks on all firearms at transfer.
Ammo purchases require one of three eligibility checks: - Certificate of Eligibility Verification ($5) – if you have current COE - Standard Ammunition Eligibility ($5) – for existing AFS records - Basic Ammunition Eligibility ($19) – comprehensive DOJ review, takes several days
- •Pro tip: If picking up firearm and ammo simultaneously, notify the clerk before finalizing paperwork to avoid duplicate background check fees.
