Courses focus on the fundamentals that actually matter:

  • Shooting Fundamentals - Stance, grip, sight alignment, breathing, trigger control, follow-through
  • Draw Techniques - The 4-count draw plus modifications for different clothing (sweep, snatch, one-hand snatch)
  • Dry Fire Practice - Safe, ammunition-free practice to build muscle memory without range costs
  • Range Training - Supervised live-fire practice with qualified instructors
  • Legal & Tactical Mindset - Understanding California law, home defense strategy, de-escalation, situational awareness

Instruction Philosophy: Proper training is critical. Bad habits are hard to break. Get the fundamentals right from a qualified instructor before moving to advanced techniques.

Shoot Safe Learning's materials cover choosing the right gun for your purpose:

Home & Self-Defense - 9MM minimum for semi-auto, .38 Special for revolvers. Recommended models include Springfield 1911 45ACP, Glock 17/19/21/23, Smith & Wesson 686 .357, Remington 870 12GA shotgun.

Concealed Carry - Reliability, proficiency, confidence, stopping power, comfort, concealability. Polymer-frame guns popular for weight; consider hand size carefully.

Recreational Shooting - .22 caliber pistols and rifles for cost-effective practice (Ruger MK III, Ruger 10/22).

Competitive Shooting - Course instruction covers IDPA, IPSC, NRA competitions with different divisions.

Training emphasizes preparation beyond the firearm:

  • Know local and federal laws; consult a lawyer about self-defense legality
  • Invest in quality gun safe storage
  • Install reliable alarm system
  • Maintain good firearms condition through regular cleaning
  • Practice regularly—proficiency matters
  • Study your environment and make a plan
  • Consider hiring professionals to review your strategy

Carry comfort directly affects whether you'll actually carry. Polymer-frame guns are lighter for long-term carry. Holster choice matters—side carry (what they teach) is fastest, comfortable, and provides good concealment. Practice your draw safely and regularly.

Shoot Safe Learning covers:

  • Holster types and carry positions (inside pants, outside pants, appendix, side, kidney, ankle)
  • Draw techniques for different clothing situations
  • Long-term vs. short-term carry considerations
  • Maintaining control and proficiency
  • Legal responsibility in every state

All training is grounded in NRA's 10 fundamental rules of safe gun handling:

1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction 2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot 3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use 4. Know your target and what's beyond it 5. Be sure the gun is safe to operate 6. Use only correct ammunition 7. Wear eye and ear protection 8. Never use alcohol or drugs before/while shooting 9. Store guns securely away from unauthorized access 10. Be aware of additional safety precautions for specific firearms and activities

Schedules vary seasonally. Courses typically include weekday and weekend options. Recent schedule shows classes running Thursday through Sunday across multiple course types, with January through March 2026 bookings already posted.
