Sky Valley Archery Academy hosts the Ed Eliason JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) program—a USA Archery curriculum designed to help young archers progress from basics to competitive excellence.
JOAD is open to any youth archer aged 8 to 20 and grows with the archer. Introductory classes teach fundamentals of proper shooting form. As young archers develop, they learn advanced techniques and earn achievement awards through the pin system.
The program emphasizes: - Range safety and proper shooting technique - Focus and self-confidence building - Team skills and peer competition - Barebow, recurve, and compound archery (though Sky Valley specializes in Olympic recurve)
Olympic recurve only. Sky Valley focuses exclusively on recurve archery—the discipline used in the Olympics.
Mike Wichser is a Level 3 NTS Coach with USA Archery, meaning he's trained to teach competitive fundamentals and competition strategy. His instruction covers:
Young archers earn colored pins by hitting score targets in regulated shoots. The progression runs from Green Pin through Gold Olympian Pin, giving kids clear goals and visible recognition of improvement.
Pin shoots happen at the facility. Typical scores:
| Pin Color | Recurve Indoor Score (60 arrows) |
|---|---|
| Green | 0–99 |
| Purple | 100–149 |
| Gray | 150–174 |
| White | 175–199 |
| Black | 200–224 |
| Blue | 225–249 |
| Yellow | 275–299 |
| Gold Olympian | 290–300 |
Sky Valley archers compete in USA Archery-sanctioned tournaments and work toward Olympic qualification pathways if they choose.
