Cedar Mills Gun Club was founded in 1938 and remains one of McLeod County's most active shooting organizations. What started as a handful of hunters has grown into a 500+ member club with three dedicated ranges, regular competitions, and a strong commitment to firearm safety education.
The club operates separate facilities for different shooting disciplines:
- •Rifle Range: 50-250 yard distances with improved earthen backstop (upgraded 2011)
- •Pistol Bay: Dedicated steel target area for handgun and rimfire training
- •Archery Range: Separate facility for bow hunting and target archery
All ranges are members-only and open 8 AM to sunset. The grounds are maintained by members and monitored through a gate access system.

The club also hosts seasonal fundraising events including the annual Fish Fry (since 1966) and Chicken & Rib Night, held in a 200-person capacity shelter facility built in 2012.
Cedar Mills has partnered with the Minnesota DNR for over 40 years, hosting youth safety courses twice yearly taught by certified instructors.
The club provides:
- •MN DNR Youth Field Day Course: Free training (separate course and validation fees apply). Students must be 11+ and complete the online hunter course first. Field days run spring and fall.

Alvin Schroeder has been volunteering to teach youth safety at this club for nearly 40 years. The program has a documented track record of reducing hunting accidents and keeping traditions alive.

The club enforces strict, non-negotiable safety standards:
- •All federal, state, and local firearm laws must be followed
- •Exploding targets are prohibited
- •No cross-range shooting; shooters must fire toward designated target areas only
- •All firing must be aimed fire into backstop areas
- •Shooters under 18 must be supervised by an adult at all times
- •No firearms discharge under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- •Members are responsible for police their brass, clean up, and verify rounds stay within range boundaries
- •Membership revocation for rule violations
Range closures are posted on the website calendar. Recurring seasonal closures occur during league events.
Cedar Mills supports:

- •DNR lake access improvement projects (funded through pancake brunches)
The club received grants from Friends of the NRA to purchase 2 trap throwers and steel targets for expanded pistol/rimfire events.
