Full description and what we offer

Lisa McAlister came to firearms training through necessity. After obtaining her concealed carry permit, she experienced a frightening break-in attempt at her own front door—an incident that made her realize she needed serious, ongoing skills development. That catalyst drove her to train with over 50 instructors across the United States and eventually launch Tame the Trigger.

Today, she brings that hard-earned perspective to every lesson. Her instruction is built on three core pillars: skills, mindset, and protection. Students don't just learn how to handle a firearm safely—they learn how to think and move under stress, manage situational awareness, and make decisions when it matters.

Tame the Trigger offers three main training formats:

Customized instruction tailored to your skill level, goals, and shooting style. Sessions cover: - Women's Foundations: Safe handling, grip, stance, sight alignment, and controlled trigger press. Built for people building habits that hold under pressure. - Youth & Men Training: Age-appropriate, respect-forward instruction with clear rules and practical drills. - Bring a Buddy: Train with a friend or family member.

Private lessons are available at Capitol Range & Firearms (Youngsville, NC) and True North Outdoor Range (Oxford, NC).

Comprehensive training on gun safety, situational awareness, and responsible firearm handling—designed for all skill levels. Group classes build knowledge and confidence while creating community among shooters.

Organizations, businesses, and places of worship can request specialized training on: - Safety protocols for places of worship - Situational awareness for businesses - Home defense - Road rage & de-escalation - Legal self-defense - Carry confidently

"The firearms world has always been a man's arena, and as a woman it can be very intimidating and scary, especially to ask questions. Having only women in my class made a world of difference in my comfort to ask questions and participate."

Lisa is the facilitator for the Raleigh chapter of A Girl & A Gun™—the nation's largest women's shooting club, with members in all 50 states and hundreds of partner ranges. A Girl & A Gun welcomes shooters of all experience levels, whether you're a defender, competitor, or just want a night out at the range with other women.

Lisa's methodology goes beyond marksmanship:

  • Safety-first curriculum with clear benchmarks
  • Fundamentals first, then layers in advanced skills (drawing from holster, managing movement, decisions under pressure)
  • Private, small-group, and range-hosted classes to fit different comfort levels
  • Women-centered environment with youth and men welcome

She's also a Member Specialist with CCW Safe, bringing legal expertise into her instruction on what comes after a self-defense incident.

"Most of my training has been private instruction and classes. It's her receptiveness to any and all questions. It's about observing Lisa leading and coaching other women in a similar way and challenging us all to practice while cheering us on as we build our skill set."

"I would never have progressed this far without the Women's program. I went from very uncomfortable to purchasing a Sig Sauer P365 Rose pistol and joining as a member within a few months."

"I was astonished at how much I learned and how comfortable I felt after the class."

Begin with a private session to establish your baseline, or join a group class to train with others at your level. If you represent a business, organization, or place of worship, contact Lisa to discuss a customized seminar.
