Location details and information
Sir Walter Gun Club was incorporated November 27, 1957, and has spent nearly seven decades building what they describe as the safest shooting facilities in North Carolina and possibly the eastern United States. After operating near Knightdale until 1989, the club relocated to its current 143-acre facility just a few miles north of Creedmoor—a dedicated space purpose-built for serious shooters.
The club maintains an active schedule across multiple disciplines:
| Discipline | Format |
|---|---|
| USPSA | Practical pistol matches |
| IPSC Pistol | International practical shooting |
| SASS Cowboy Action | Single action revolver competitions |
| High Power Rifle | Long-range rifle matches |
| Smallbore Rifle | Precision rifle training |
| Skeet | Shotgun sport shooting |
| Bullseye Pistol | Precision pistol |
| 5 Stand Clays | Clay target shooting |
| Junior Rifle | Youth rifle programs |
| Youth Skeet | Youth shotgun programs |
Membership is capped at 300 to keep range crowded and maintain facility quality. New members are encouraged to attend monthly club meetings (third Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., September–May at Wake County Shrine Club in Raleigh).
Sir Walter offers NRA firearms courses to the general public taught by certified NRA instructors. They also provide North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun permit courses led by NCDOJ-certified instructors. Classes cap at 6 students and often include multiple instructors to emphasize safe firearm handling as the priority.
Beyond regular matches and training:
Sir Walter operates as a not-for-profit private club. Members volunteer through committee assignments—committee work typically requires one 8-hour day per year, or members can pay an annual operating fee instead. This volunteer model keeps dues reasonable while maintaining the 143-acre facility, ranges, and equipment.
