Log Cabin Shop in Lodi, Ohio runs hands-on beginner classes in muzzleloading rifle construction taught by Dave Kutcher and John Gaeckle. The class starts with a pre-shaped, pre-inlet stock (full or half stock options) and furniture of your choice. Students finish with either a flintlock or percussion rifle using brass or steel hardware.
Classes run 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Limited to 10 students per session. Pre-registration required with $50 deposit. Full class fee is $275 plus parts.

Students welcome to come early or stay late for additional work time. Classroom available throughout the week during regular store hours.
Every October, Log Cabin hosts their Early American Trades Fair (October 10 & 11, 2025). Demonstrations include powder horn making, forging, leather work, furniture making, gun building, barrel rifling, candle dipping, flint knapping, and quilting. Free admission and parking, family-friendly.
Beyond rifles, Log Cabin offers intensive workshops in traditional skills:
Three-day workshop with Clinton Byers. Learn to handcraft traditional powder horns using basic hand tools—files, rasps, knives, scrapers, drills. $300 class fee plus materials.
Kathy England teaches decorative scrimshaw work on powder horns and other pieces. Three days, $300 class fee plus materials. Beginners welcome.
Maryellen Pratt teaches hand-stitched leather hunting pouches and gear. Two-day class, $200 plus materials. All tools provided or bring your own.
Multiple advanced classes available, including James Black-style Bowie knife making ($400, knifemaking experience required) and tomahawk forging with proper forge welding techniques.
Three-day seminar with Michael Lea, a gunsmith since 1967 and head gunsmith at Ohio Village Gunshop. Limited to six students with intense personal instruction. Focus on making, grinding, and using metal cutting gravers. $575 per person with $250 deposit.
Three-day hands-on workshop teaching natural buckskin production using fats, oils, and smoke. All experience levels welcome. $300 class fee plus $25 materials.
Ian Pratt and Joe Seabolt teach high-carbon steel blade forging, tempering, and traditional handle assembly. Blacksmithing experience helpful but not required. $300 includes all materials.
