IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) is the governing body for a shooting sport that simulates real-world self-defense scenarios. Founded in 1996, IDPA now has over 17,008 members across 50 foreign countries. South Cuyahoga runs extensive IDPA programming at their Chatham location.
What you need to start: - Service-type pistol or revolver (9mm/.38 Special or larger, or .22 in Not For Competition division) - Holster (pancake-style or similar) - Minimum 2 magazines or speed loaders (3 recommended) - Concealment garment (jacket, vest, or overshirt—simulates real-world carry)
If your handgun works for self-defense, it's competitive for IDPA. No special "competition only" gear required.
