Northwest Archery traces its roots back to 1949, when Glenn and Margaret St.Charles opened their shop in Normandy Park, Washington. For over 50 years, it was a gathering place for traditional archers—a place to browse the museum, smell the Port Orford cedar, and meet with Glenn and Margaret over coffee. In 2004, their daughter Suzanne St.Charles Hammond and her husband Roger took over the business and transformed it into a specialized mail order operation focused entirely on what Suzanne knows best: handmade arrows.
"Arrows are our specialty." - Northwest Archery
Every arrow is handmade by Suzanne St.Charles. The process starts with selecting from three premium wood shaft options:
Each shaft is spined, assembled, and embellished in their arrow shop. You choose from nearly any feather color combination, lacquer crest designs, and point options.
Since arrows must match your specific bow and draw length, Northwest Archery handles orders by phone or email rather than online checkout. They ask a few key questions:
| Information Needed | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Bow type (recurve, longbow, selfbow, horsebow) | Determines arrow spine |
| Bow weight at your draw length | Critical for proper spine |
| Your draw length | Defines arrow length |
| Bowstring material (Dacron, Fast Flight, etc.) | Affects arrow selection |
Their spine chart covers bow weights from 25# up to 75#, with spine ranges matching your setup.
Custom Deluxe Arrows - Already made and in stock, cut to your length with field points installed. Prices range from $187–$293 per dozen depending on spine and materials. All arrows are weight-matched within 10 grains.
Groups of 6 - Smaller quantities for those testing or gifting.
Youth Arrows - Sized and spined for younger archers.
Decorative Arrows - "Talking sticks" ($75 each or sets of 2-3) featuring hand-painted lacquer crests, dyed barred turkey feathers, and vintage or replica medieval broadheads. Perfect for display or gifts.
Arrows as Decor - Douglas Fir and Port Orford Cedar options with hand-painted crests, ready for old leather quivers.
Northwest Archery specializes in Arrow of Light Award arrows for Scout advancement.
The business has deep roots in bowhunting history. In 1961, the first official Pope and Young Club meeting was held in the shop's trophy room with six attendees. The St.Charles/Pope and Young Museum collection that was housed there is now at Pope and Young Club Headquarters in Chatfield, Minnesota. They also stock First Edition 1975 Pope and Young Club Record Books, signed by Glenn St.Charles.
When emailing, include your phone number and zip code so they can quote shipping costs with your price.
Payment options: PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover Card, Money Orders. For card payments, call rather than email for security.
Northwest Archery isn't trying to be everything. They do one thing exceptionally well: handmade wood arrows matched precisely to your bow. Suzanne personally dips every arrow twice in clear industrial lacquer, then twice again for crown colors, and hand-paints each crest. This attention to detail has kept customers coming back for decades.
