Location details and information

Old York Shootists is an NRA-sanctioned, SASS-affiliated club based in Brooksville, Alabama that brings old west history and competitive shooting together. Members share a passion for period firearms, authentic costumes, and the fastest-growing shooting sport in America—with the best safety record of any shooting discipline.

Shooters compete in scenarios designed to capture wild west flavor, using only firearms manufactured or designed before 1899. This is a three-gun sport:

  • •Pistols: Single-action revolvers only (.32 caliber or larger), in three classes: Traditional, Modern adjustable sights, or Black Powder cap-and-ball
  • •Rifles: Lever-action carbines in pistol caliber (.25 or larger)—Winchester 1866/1873/1892 models and reproductions dominate
  • •Shotguns: Double-barrel side-by-side (no ejectors) or period-appropriate slide/lever-action, restricted to two rounds

Costumes range from historical figures (Wyatt Earp, Annie Oakley) to movie characters (Josie Wales) or invented period trades (gambler, 49er, working cowboy). Cowboy hats, boots, jeans, and western-cut shirts are standard; sneakers and t-shirts aren't acceptable.

First-time observers shoot free. Club provides firearms, ammunition, and lunch. You'll shoot the final stage of the match and get oriented to safety rules and gear requirements—no investment needed to test the waters.

"The shooter who has the most fun is the true winner."

This isn't IPSC-style competition. Most shooters range from laid-back to serious, bonded by camaraderie rather than cutthroat stakes. A new shooter orientation is mandatory for first participation.

  • •Age: 8 and up (minors must be accompanied by parent/guardian)
  • •Cost: $10 for members, $15 for non-members per shoot
  • •Eligibility: No felony convictions or firearms restrictions
  • •Joining: Shoot a couple matches, then submit an application to become an Old York Shootist

Range safety is enforced strictly—all firearms loaded/unloaded at designated tables only, with a "Posse Leader" safety officer assigned to each shooting group.
