Location details and information
The Jim Jones Shooting Range operates as a members-only facility managed by the Tonto Rim Sports Club, located approximately 5 miles south of Payson, Arizona on Highway 87 (Beeline Highway). The range sits on National Forest land and has served shooters since the club's establishment in 1979.
Public Access: The Main Range opens to non-members on Saturdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Cost is $10 per person (cash only). Range Safety Officers are on duty. Call 928-970-1766 to verify it's open before heading out—occasional closures happen due to weather, fire restrictions, or lack of volunteer RSOs.
The facility gives you five separate shooting environments, each with specific rules:
| Range Area | Details | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Archery Range | Target and field target setup | No broadheads, no firearms |
| Main Range (100-yard) | Primary public-access range | All firearms including full auto/binary triggers. No shooting beyond 100-yard berm. No steel targets on Saturdays. |
| High Power Range | 300-yard corridor | Pistols only if shooter also has rifles downrange. Restricted use after 200-yard line without special approval. |
| Pistol Bays 1-5 | Five individual bays | All firearms except .50 caliber+. Targets within 10 feet of berm only. No shooting from shade structures. |
| Pistol Bay 6 | Special use only | Requires approval and closure of 300-yard corridor beyond 200-yard line. |
Eye and hearing protection are mandatory—you won't be allowed to shoot without them. Bring your own targets (no clay pigeons allowed). If you're patterning a shotgun, bring your own cardboard backer; the range won't provide one for shotguns. Range extinguishers are available, but it's your responsibility to clean up all brass and remove targets when done.
Annual membership costs $100, valid January 1 through December 31 (no prorating). Your membership covers your spouse and all children under 18. You can bring up to two guests per membership. New members receive a gate card by mail within 1-2 days after approval; replacement cards cost $25.
Members get 24/7 access to all range areas on a first-come, first-serve basis (subject to scheduled events). The club issues a monthly newsletter with competition schedules, law enforcement reservations, and archery events. Regular monthly meetings happen the third Thursday of each month at 6:30pm at the Central Arizona Realtors Association meeting room (600 SR-60, Payson, AZ).
Family-Friendly: Kids under 18 must have a parent or guardian present. Adult supervision means the adult is watching and NOT shooting simultaneously—one adult per youth or one youth per adult max. A liability waiver must be signed by a parent.
"It is always fire season at the Range." If you see fire, call cease fire immediately and dial 911. Use available extinguishers if safe to do so, then report to the Range Manager or Club President.
What's Not Allowed: - Armor-piercing, tracer, incendiary, or steel-core ammunition (anything that sparks) - Tannerite or other explosive targets - Aerial or thrown-target shooting - Ground targets (rocks, cans, balls) - Animal shooting (Arizona state law violation) - Alcohol or drugs on range property (terminates membership immediately) - Loaning your gate card to anyone (considered trespassing)
What IS Allowed: - Federally licensed Class III firearms (full auto) - Shotguns (with your own cardboard targets) - Dogs (leashed, clean up required) - All standard rifle, pistol, and archery disciplines
The Tonto Rim Sports Club is affiliated with the National Rifle Association and Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association. The club's stated purpose: education and organized shooting to improve firearm safety, handling, proper care, and marksmanship. The club also organizes invitational monthly competitions throughout the year.
From the Phoenix Valley: Take Highway 87 north for approximately 70 miles. Turn right onto Jim Jones Shooting Range Road (NF-375B) and drive 1.6 miles to reach the range. The entrance is clearly marked.
