Fernan Rod & Gun Club is a 501(c)(4) non-profit established in 1989 on Idaho Panhandle National Forest land. It's the only facility of its type in Idaho—and one of only a handful in the entire United States—where military, police, and civilian shooters share the same ranges. That combination matters. It means the range operates under military-grade safety standards and benefits from professional-level range management.

FRGC operates six main firing lines:

All pistol bays feature concrete floors and metal roofs. Members get 24/7 key-card access year-round, plus access to the club building for shelter, target shacks stocked with variety targets, and a full schedule of organized events.
FRGC hosts and sanctions multiple competition formats:
- •USPSA Matches – United States Practical Shooting Association sanctioned events
- •GSSF Matches – Glock Sport Shooting Foundation competitions
- •Shoot SIG Matches – SIG Sauer-focused competition series
- •Three-Gun Matches – Rifle, shotgun, and pistol combined events
- •Women at FRGC – Female-focused shooting events and programs
Matches run throughout the year. Check the calendar at FRGC.org for current dates and registration.
New members: Safety check required before unsupervised range access. All family members and guests must be supervised by a member.
FRGC offers instruction through in-house programs and partnerships:
- •Idaho Enhanced Concealed Weapons License (CWL) courses
- •USCCA Certified Defensive Pistol Training
- •Defense & Tactical courses – ranging from pistol fundamentals to advanced combatives
- •First Aid & Medical training – trauma response and emergency medicine
- •Hunter Education – IDFG certified programs (free for students and instructors)
- •Boy Scouts & Civil Air Patrol – youth shooting sports programs (free)
- •Search & Rescue training – specialized courses for volunteer SAR teams

Annual Membership: $300/year (January–December) - Family membership includes primary member, spouse, and children under 18 living in the home - No additional day-use fees—flat annual dues - All revenue goes directly to facility development and improvements
Lifetime Membership: $2,500 (general) / $2,000 (age 65+)
Free Access for: - Active-duty military using the range during unit activities - Police agencies during scheduled activities - IDFG Hunter Education students and instructors - Youth organizations (Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, Search & Rescue)
FRGC enforces strict range rules. The four cardinal safety rules are posted and enforced:
1. Always consider all guns as loaded 2. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction 3. Keep finger outside trigger guard until sights are on target 4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it
Additional rules cover eye/ear protection, cease-fire procedures, target placement, ammunition types (no tracer rounds, no Tannerite), alcohol prohibition, speed limits (10 mph on facility), and wildfire prevention. Violations can result in immediate membership termination.

From I-90 eastbound: Take exit 15 toward Sherman Ave, merge onto N 23rd St, turn left onto E Sherman Ave, then slight left onto E Fernan Lake Rd. Follow the scenic winding lake road 6 miles, then turn right onto the range road.
FRGC was built from scratch in 1989 by shooters and law enforcement who understood what a real shooting community needed. The founder, a former NRA club officer in Washington State, chose this location—originally an abandoned dumping ground—and spent the first months clearing trash and rebuilding infrastructure. The result is a 35+ year track record of professional management, continuous improvement, and zero tolerance for unsafe behavior.
Today, FRGC hosts national and international shooters attending conferences in Coeur d'Alene and Spokane. It operates under a Special Use Permit from the Forest Service and maintains partnerships with military, law enforcement, and civilian shooting sports organizations.
