The Warren County Izaak Walton League sits on 19 acres directly across from Lake Ahquabi State Park's main entrance, about a mile south of Indianola in Warren County, Iowa. Founded as part of the national Izaak Walton League conservation movement, this 501(c)(3) nonprofit operates with over 400 active members dedicated to outdoor sports and natural resource stewardship.

Trap Range - Voice-activated trap machines for clay target shooting - Fall and spring trap leagues running 6 weeks each - Thursday night summer leagues - Weekend shoots hosted by Grandview College and Indianola Trap teams - Large clay bird inventory with semi-loads delivered seasonally

Rifle & Pistol Range - Extends to 130 yards - Summer rifle leagues on Wednesdays (post-Memorial Day) - Member-exclusive access - Range closures posted on website calendar during events

Archery Range - Targets set up 20 yards to 100 yards - Bag targets established east of Trap 4 - No broadheads permitted to protect targets - Mid Iowa Archers host competitions with large attendance

Check the calendar before visiting - The club posts range closures when events are scheduled. Mowing happens Wednesday afternoons 3-6:30 PM and closes the grounds.

All three ranges are member-only. Interested shooters should contact (515) 229-7418 or email through their website. Membership applications available online.

The club does host select events open to non-members—check their calendar/events page for public shooting opportunities, youth fishing days, and community activities.

  • Kids Fishing Day: First Saturday in June at Warren County Conservation pond, includes fish cleaning clinic and fish fry
  • Monthly Member Meetings: Held Tuesdays with dinner (freewill donation), guest speakers on hunting, shooting sports, and conservation
  • Youth & College Teams: Fall and spring trap competition teams
  • Seasonal Leagues: Spring/fall trap leagues, summer rifle leagues, Thursday night trap leagues
  • Open House: Annual community day (recently August 7) with all three ranges open to the public
  • Community Cleanup: Earth Day conservation road cleanup (2 miles maintained annually)

The club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2022 as part of the National Izaak Walton League's centennial. Members attend the annual national convention focused on water purity, air quality, wildlife conservation, and sustainable resource use.

The organization actively participates in conservation initiatives including stream protection and habitat stewardship through the national Izaak Walton League network.
