Full description and what we offer
Bowhunters of Rockingham started in 1955 with 18 members and $152.52 in annual expenses. Today it's one of Virginia's most active archery clubs, hosting hundreds of shooters at monthly tournaments and maintaining facilities that serious archers actually use year-round.
The club sits on just over 100 acres of wooded land on the western slope of Massanutten Peak in Keezletown, Virginia. That land includes:
The property is also open to members for bowhunting only during legal archery hunting seasons.
They host different formats depending on season:
Outdoor Season (March-September) - Monthly 3D shoots - Field/Hunter tournaments - ASA qualifiers (held in May and June) - Annual Bowhunters Jamboree (September) - Specialty events: Hairy Man 3D, Dave Proctor Memorial Shoot, benefit shoots
Indoor Season (Fall-Winter) - Weekly indoor 3D shoots - NFAA sanctioned rounds - Vegas format shoots - Youth tournaments (historically hosted St. Jude Children's Hospital charity shoots)
They run continuous league play to keep shooters sharp:
Leagues draw team competitors and individual shooters of all skill levels. Winners are tracked and celebrated each season.
BOR has been the go-to host for major Virginia archery tournaments for decades:
| Year | Tournament Hosted |
|---|---|
| 1958 | VBA State Archery Tournament (358 shooters) |
| 1989-1991 | VBA State Tournament (three consecutive years) |
| 2015-2022 | VBA Sectional Indoor State Tournament (multiple years) |
| 2016-2017 | VBA 3-D Spring Classic |
| 2020 | Combined VBA State events (COVID rescheduled) |
1955 started with 18 shooters at Massanutten Caverns. By 1959, they bought 90 acres at the current location. In 1972, they moved indoor shoots to local schools. By 1984, they'd built their own 40' × 100' metal building (using bonds paid off by league income). Every major upgrade—from the indoor range to the cement floors to the kitchen and bathrooms—came from tournament and league revenue.
In 2019, they cleared up boundary issues by purchasing 11 additional acres, giving them clear title to just over 100 acres of property.
Most archery clubs run a few shoots per year. BOR runs monthly public 3D shoots March-September, weekly winter indoor tournaments, continuous league play, and host state-level competitions. They've been doing this consistently for 70 years. The facilities are maintained year-round specifically for member use—not just tournament weekends.
