Full description and what we offer
John G. Zimmerman operates out of a historic 200-year-old armorer's house in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia—the exact location where these firearms were originally made. Founded in 1997, his shop specializes exclusively in martial black powder guns, with deep expertise in Harpers Ferry muskets and pistols.
"An immensely skilled black powder gunsmith. The quality of his work is unsurpassed, you'll be glad you gave your guns to John as no one else comes close to the level of his workmanship." — Lee J.
John's "Second Generation" reproductions are hand-crafted to original specifications and are indistinguishable from period pieces—with the critical advantage that they can actually be fired and enjoyed without damaging historically significant arms. His work has been featured in major television productions and motion pictures.
Reproductions (Starting at $2,500) Custom hand-crafted muskets and pistols built to investment-grade standards. His queue is strict and turnaround times are long, but the result is a collectable firearm that shoots. Occasionally other makes and models are available.
Dearf barbing (Starting at $75/hour) Removal and re-marking of black powder firearms to correct historical configuration. John maintains extensive reference materials and period-correct stamps. Well-known in reenactor and skirmisher circles. Note: Does not work on brass frame arms.
Repair & Restoration (Starting at $75/hour, $100/hour while machining) A limited number of pieces are accepted each year. Work adheres to museum-quality standards and suits serious collectors. Quotes based on physical inspection only.
Additional Services Valuation, research, and media consultation available at gunsmithing rates.
Gallery includes Harpers Ferry reproductions, Kentucky long rifles, period pistols, and vintage tools. Prices range from $500 to $5,000+.
