Overview

Location details and information

Named after a legendary 1700s frontiersman and marksman, Lewis Wetzel Rifle & Pistol Club started in the 1940s as a gathering place for hunters and shooters in the Wheeling, West Virginia area. It's still run exactly that way—by the members, for the members.

This is a private club with a 400-member limit. Access to indoor and outdoor ranges year-round, plus participation in organized competitions and casual shooting. The low annual dues ($100/year after a one-time $100 initiation fee) work because volunteers handle everything—no overhead eating into member fees.

Membership year runs July 1st through June 30th. New applicants must be sponsored by a current member in good standing and pass a required Range Safety Orientation before membership takes effect.

  • Bullseye (Conventional) Pistol — structured pistol competition with match results posted online
  • PPC (Police Pistol Combat) — tactical pistol events
  • High Power Rifle — full-power rifle matches
  • Steel Challenge — fast-action rifle competition
  • 22 Benchrest — precision rimfire shooting
  • Rimfire Sporter/Air — lightweight rifle and air gun events
  • Trap — shotgun sports
  • Black Powder — historical firearms shooting
  • Archery Range — dedicated archery facility with published use guidelines

Public Can Attend Events — All published shooting events listed on the club website are open to the general public. First-time visitors should plan to observe, learn range procedures, and make introductions. Hearing and eye protection is mandatory.

The club operates under a formal safety commitment with a Chief Range Officer overseeing all activities. Most commonly violated safety rules:

1. Failure to uncase and case firearms only at the firing line 2. Keeping finger off trigger until target is acquired

Safety is each member's individual responsibility while on the range.

Lewis Wetzel is an NRA and CMP affiliate organization and maintains active membership in: - West Virginia Wildlife Federation - West Virginia State Rifle & Pistol Association

Because of this volunteer model, member dues stay low and that money goes directly back into range improvements.
