Coyote Valley Cowboys—Cowboy Shootin' Home

Coyote Valley Cowboys operates a dedicated cowboy action shooting range at Coyote Valley Sporting Clays, 1000 San Bruno Ave. in Morgan Hill, California. This is a Single Action Shooting Society (SASS)-governed club built around time-and-accuracy competition using period firearms and cowboy-themed scenarios.

The club's range consists of five distinct stages, each with unique shooting setups:

• •The Bank - Pistol, rifle, and shotgun targets
• •The Saloon - Mixed firearm scenario
• •The Livery Stable - Varied target arrangements
• •The Stage Coach - Dynamic stage layout
• •The Corral - Pistol-focused stage

For each match, the Town Council creates a unique shooting scenario at every stage. This prevents memorization and puts emphasis entirely on individual shooter skill. Points are deducted for misses or procedural errors. Lowest accumulated time wins.

Buckaroos and Buckarettes (15 and under) shoot free at all matches.

• •Annual Membership: $30 per family (includes spouse and children under 18). Expires 12/31. After July 1: $30/year.
• •Open Practice: $20/day per member (free for ages 15 and under)
• •Monthly Match: $15/member, $25/non-member (free for ages 15 and under)
• •Classroom Rental: $10/student, $50 minimum

During normal SASS shooting:

• •Only SASS-compliant firearms (replicas in use prior to 1900)
• •Low-velocity ammunition with pure lead bullets
• •.22 caliber (S-L-LR) guns and ammo are exempt from period requirements
• •Centerfire rifle shooting allowed ONLY on paper targets
• •Frangible ammunition NOT allowed

During instructor-led classes and Steel Challenge matches, instructors/match directors determine allowable firearms and ammo.

The Sheriff (Bob Manrubia, "Bad Eye Bobolu") runs individual cowboy shooting intro appointments. He supplies the know-how, firearms, and accessories. You pay for ammunition—very popular for both new and experienced shooters.

• •Pre-Qualification Requirement: If you've never shot a SASS match, you must complete a one-on-one pre-qualification session at the range before entering monthly matches. Contact the Sheriff or Match Director Lucas McDennis to schedule.

All shooters must follow strict safety protocols:

• •Eye and ear protection mandatory for shooters and observers
• •Wrap-around glasses recommended for side protection
• •Guns unloaded and actions open until on the line
• •Finger off trigger, muzzle downrange at all times
• •Maximum 2 people at firing line during open practice (unless Range Officer RO1/RO2 supervises)
• •Minors under 18 must shoot at same stage with parent, guardian, or RO1-certified member
• •All persons must sign liability waiver and pay range fee before shooting
• •The 170 rule in effect (perpendicular fire, no shooting at buildings, props, trees, or downrange hillsides)

Certified firearm instructors can reserve specific stages for classes. Requirements include:

• •Minimum credentials: certified range officer or range master
• •$1,000,000 general liability insurance (CVSC named as additional insured)
• •Wear issued CVSC Instructor ID at all times
• •Maintain facility standards: leave range as found, pick up brass, report damage
• •Electronic waivers required (paper waivers only when pro-shop closed)
• •Instructors liable for all bullet impact damage to targets

Reservation Pricing for Instructors:

Deposits required for reservations 61-150 days in advance ($200, refundable with 60+ days notice).

For faster-paced action, Steel Challenge matches run on the 1st Saturday of each month with setup at 7:30am, safety brief at 8:30am, and match start at 9am.

What You Shoot: - .22 rimfire pistols - Centerfire pistols (.38 Special minimum) - 9mm minimum for centerfire - Pistol caliber carbines (max 1600 fps)

• •How It Works: Five targets per stage, hit 5 times with the Stop Plate (red post) always hit last. Four best times are scored (highest time dropped). Misses = +3 seconds. Maximum 30-second time limit.

• •Cold Range Protocol: All firearms unloaded until RSO commands "Make Ready." Rifles must have empty chamber indicators. Muzzle-up carry required for uncased rifles.

This is highly addictive—shooters report buying extra magazines, holsters, and accessories rapidly after their first match.
