Self Defense Firearms Training

Self Defense Firearms Training operates out of Huntington Beach and teaches handgun, shotgun, and rifle courses ranging from beginner fundamentals to advanced tactical scenarios. All instruction comes from Greg Block, a law enforcement instructor and expert witness in Federal and State Courts since 1983. Staff instructors are certified by the FBI, NRA, POST, and/or DOJ.

The training philosophy centers on civilian self-defense situations—not competition shooting or hunting. Classes cover survival shooting skills, tactical decision-making, and real-world encounters at home, work, in cars, and public spaces.

• •Basic Handgun - Seven hours for $100. Covers firearms safety fundamentals, proper stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger control, and rapid fire drills. You'll fire 250 rounds at life-size paper targets. This class is state-certified for California's Firearm Safety Certificate (F.S.C.). Prerequisites: none. Gun provided if needed (Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver).

• •Basic Handgun - Two - Three-hour refresher for $80. Focuses on accuracy and confidence building. Covers rapid multiple shots, double and triple taps (not allowed at most ranges), and multi-target drills. Requires 200 rounds. Prerequisites: Basic Handgun.

• •Intermediate Handgun - Seven hours for $120. Addresses common home defense scenarios: gun jams, quick reloads, one-arm shooting (left and right), malfunction drills, close quarter battle (CQB), half and full turns. You'll fire 300 rounds. Prerequisites: Basic Handgun.

• •Advanced Handgun - Eight hours for $140. Adds kneeling, sitting, and prone positions. Teaches movement, shooting from cover, moving targets, and problem-solving under pressure. Targets include life-size silhouettes, falling metal plates, dueling trees, bowling pins. Requires 400 rounds. Prerequisites: Intermediate Handgun.

• •Situation Tactics Handgun - Three hours for $100. State-of-the-art tactical responses to self-defense in various environments. Covers tactical principles, environmental awareness, safe zones, communication, shoot/no-shoot decisions. Requires 200 rounds. Prerequisites: Advanced Handgun.

• •Concealed Drawing Handgun - Three hours for $100. Safe drawing from hip holster, concealed carry techniques, and IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) match skills. Satisfies CCW training requirements for all California counties. Requires 200 rounds. Prerequisites: Advanced Handgun.

• •Low-Light Shooting Handgun - Three hours for $100. Techniques for low-light deployment: drawing while holding a flashlight (Harris, Chapman, Rodgers techniques), ready positions, malfunction drills, reloading, using cover. Suggested flashlights: Streamlight, Maglight, Surefire. Requires 200 rounds. Prerequisites: Advanced Handgun.

• •Basic Shotgun - Seven hours for $120. Self-defense shotgun training (not trap/skeet). Covers mounting and firing from shoulder and underarm, tactical reloading, combat reloading. Metal targets used. Requires 200 rounds of #7.5 or #8 birdshot. Gun provided if needed (Remington 870 in 12 or 20 gauge). Prerequisites: none.

• •Advanced Shotgun - Eight hours for $140. Applies previous techniques to moving targets. Movement drills at 50 and 100 yards. Requires 175 rounds birdshot, 20 rounds '00' buck, 15 rounds rifled slug. Prerequisites: Basic Shotgun.

• •Basic Rifle or Carbine - Seven hours for $120. Shooting positions, sighting in, target identification, firing from cover. Life-size paper silhouettes and metal targets. Requires 150 rounds. Gun provided if needed. Prerequisites: none.

• •Advanced Rifle/Urban Sporting - Covers observation techniques, weather effects, range estimation, proper tactical deployment.

• •Scenarios - Handgun and Shotgun Combination - Eight hours for $130. Accuracy under stress and tactical control at 50 and 100 yards. Requires 200 rounds handgun, 50 rounds shotgun (25 birdshot, 15 '00' buck, 10 slugs). Prerequisites: Advanced Handgun + Basic Shotgun.

• •Private Training - Individual, group, and corporate self-defense training available. Greg Block travels nationwide for law enforcement and military instruction.

• •Law Enforcement & Military Classes - Specialized training available. Contact for details.

No steel core, steel jacketed, or tracer ammunition allowed. Copper washed or full metal jacket rounds acceptable.

• •Holsters (Intermediate+): Strongside hip holster only. Approved brands: Galco (Speed Master, Combat Master, Avenger), Bianchi (Askins' Avenger, 4L), Kydex. Not allowed: Serpa by Blackhawk, thigh rigs, shoulder holsters, ankle holsters, cross-draw.

• •Reloading Gear: Revolver shooters need three speed loaders with belt pouch. Semi-auto shooters need two additional magazines with belt pouch.

• •Belt: Quality belt with loops to support holster and gear.

• •Eye/Ear Protection: Required. Provided free if needed.

• •Firearm Requirements: Double-action revolver or single/double-action semi-auto pistol any caliber. AR-15 type pistols not allowed. Must be in good working order. Guns provided free for basic classes (reservation required).
