Windsor Marksmen's Association

Windsor Marksmen's Association started as a small group of local sportsmen in the early 1960s with just 20 members. Today the club boasts over 200 members, welcoming shooters regardless of race, creed, ethnic background, gender, or experience level.

The club runs a seriously diversified match schedule:

• •Bullseye target matches – precision pistol and rifle competition
• •Trap shooting – clay bird events
• •Bowling pin matches – a niche discipline
• •NRA Rapid Fire matches – timed shooting events
• •Archery target shooting – for archers in the membership
• •Black powder matches – muzzle-loaded firearm events

The range sits in quiet, peaceful settings adjacent to the Connecticut River in Windsor:

• •100-yard firing line – 10 shooting points
• •50-yard firing line – 10 shooting points
• •Clay bird capability – on the 100-yard rifle range

Requirements to join: - Minimum age 21 - Current NRA membership - Valid Connecticut pistol or long gun permit - Sponsored by a member in good standing (2+ years)

What membership costs: - Base annual dues: $60 - Required work credits: 50 per calendar year (earn credits at meetings, matches, range cleanup, Shad Derby volunteer work) - Failing to earn 50 credits adds $30 assessment - Late renewal (after Feb 21): additional $25 fee

Member obligations: - Attend at least 3 monthly meetings per year - Complete 2 workdays annually (range cleanup or Shad Derby participation) - All first-year members cannot bring guests to the range

Regular membership meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month (except July and September) at:

WMA enforces strict safety protocols:

• •No shooting before 9 AM (Mon-Sat) or before 1 PM Sunday; must cease at sunset
• •Hearing and eye protection required for all shooters when firing line is hot
• •All firearms handled and loaded only on firing line, pointed downrange or straight down
• •No metal plate, glass, hard plastic, or explosive targets
• •No ground-level targets (prevents ricochets)
• •Only one firearm at firing line at a time
• •Empty Chamber Indicators (ECI) required – highly visible yellow/orange, extending visibly from open action
• •All weapons off firing line must be holstered, unloaded, or secured in rifle racks with bolt open and ECI inserted
• •Dry firing permitted only on firing line while line is hot
• •No alcoholic beverages on club property
• •Speed limit 15 MPH on Great Meadow Road
• •Members must display club badge on lanyard for police verification

Firearms not on firing line must be: - Holstered, OR - Unloaded with action open and magazine removed and encased, OR - At rifle rack unloaded, muzzle up, bolt open, magazines out, ECI inserted

• •Members in good standing can bring up to 2 guests (non-immediate family)
• •Only 1 guest allowed on firing line at a time, directly supervised
• •Guests must be supervised by host member except during matches (Line Officer supervised)
• •Guests cannot bring their own guests
• •First-year members cannot bring guests
• •All guests required to sign liability waiver

WMA allows certified instructors to hold pistol permit classes at the range:

• •Instructor must be WMA member for minimum 1 year
• •Must hold current Connecticut-recognized instructor certification
• •Must carry $1M liability insurance with WMA listed as additional insured
• •Class size capped at 5 students
• •Maximum 2 classes per instructor per month
• •$50 annual application fee
• •All students must sign WMA liability waiver
• •Must follow all current WMA range rules

WMA maintains structured governance:

• •Chief Instructor responsible for new member firearms safety checkout
• •Executive Officer (XO) handling range scheduling
• •Club Safety Officer (CSO) coordinating with instructors
• •Match chairs for each event
• •New members checked out in safe firearms handling before range access
