Fortress Training has been the go-to firearms instruction provider in Maryland since 2013. With 1,200+ classes taught, 10,000+ hours of instruction, and a 99.6% pass rate, they've built something most ranges never attempt: training that actually prepares you for carrying a gun in the real world.
The difference shows immediately. Their Wear and Carry courses exceed Maryland State Police requirements by a substantial margin. While other instructors teach the bare minimum to satisfy state requirements, Fortress layers in extraction techniques, de-escalation strategies, decision-making frameworks, and stress inoculation that competitors won't touch.
Two training paths, both exceeding state mandates:
Compliance Option ($300 virtual) satisfies the 16-hour requirement. Good if you just need the box checked.
Full Immersion ($500) is what you actually need. Two 8-hour days split between classroom instruction and either off-range tactical training or on-range live fire (150-250 rounds).
Day 1 covers Maryland carry law, handgun safety, operational mechanics, ammunition selection, reciprocity, law enforcement encounters, and the physiological/psychological effects of violent situations.
But the exclusive Fortress additions are where the training separates itself:
M4 Carry Quadrant: Understanding the relationship between your firearm, belt, holster, and body positioning. This single concept, they claim, can save tens of thousands in legal fees and hundreds of hours of time.
Day 2 splits into two focused tracks:
OFF-Range Training (skill mastery focus): Uses professional law enforcement and military training equipment. Real decision-making scenarios. Responsible force vs. deadly force instruction. Command presence training. Close-quarters work.
ON-Range Training (live fire focus): Private farms across Maryland. 150-250 rounds downrange. Same core skills, more ammunition volume.
Four different formats to fit your schedule:
| Option | Cost | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual Online | $250 | Home computer, then range qualification |
| Live Fire Day | $350 | All-day range day, 250+ rounds |
| Full Immersion | $350 | 2-part classroom + hands-on scenarios |
| Premier Renewal | $650 | 2-day advanced simulator + 350-round range day |
The Virtual option is pure compliance. The Live Fire day gets you downrange. Full Immersion adds decision-making drills, shoot/no-shoot scenarios, and stress inoculation. Premier Renewal uses advanced simulators and limits class size to 8 people.
Fortress claims to be the originator of all-inclusive HQL training. They've trained over 20,000 Marylanders through the HQL process. This satisfies Maryland's requirement to legally purchase a handgun.
This is where Fortress emphasizes they do the real development work. Multiple levels from beginner to advanced tactical.
Firearm Fundamentals ($95 + range fees): Addresses the 3 biggest mistakes new shooters make. Combines off-range skill work with live fire to reduce learning time.
Ladies and Lead ($200): 3-hour women-focused course. Everything provided—firearms, ammunition, gear. Moves beginners from apprehension to comfort level.
Pistol PRO ($300, 5-6 hours, 150-250 rounds): For shooters without a permit who want professional-level skills. Focus on accuracy techniques, draw speed reduction, close-quarter gun work, combat zone identification, and central nervous system disruption for anatomical reasons. Prerequisites: basic firearm competency (no beginners). Minimum .380 caliber.
Advanced Pistol ($450, 1 day, 350-500 rounds): Highest-level training. Static and moving targets, barricade work, table shooting (office/restaurant scenarios), 4-way movement, steel targets, composite human targets, and the "Attack Man" target (weather permitting). On private farms. Note: Not for beginners—you can be disqualified for lack of competency with no refund.
Training includes: Firearms, ammunition, eye/ear protection, and holsters for most Baltimore-area classes. You just need a belt.
They emphasize repeatedly that this isn't a business for them—it's a mission. They didn't "jump into the firearms training game." The instruction comes from 30+ years of human development experience, refined over training 20,000+ clients. They focus on the mental and decision-making components that will actually keep you alive, not just the mechanics of shooting straight.
