Full description and what we offer
Heart of Maryland Bowhunters started in 1994 as a small group of bowhunters looking for a place to practice. Over three decades, they've grown into one of the best 3D archery clubs in Maryland—and they're a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The club sits on 40 acres within Patapsco State Park in Marriottsville, Howard County. It's structured around three member-only practice ranges plus a separate 30-target 3D course reserved for public shoots and events.
Member access includes: - Dawn-to-dusk access to all practice ranges, 365 days a year - Free entry to all monthly 30-target 3D shoots - Gate access code to the member parking lot and facilities - Unlimited practice on three dedicated ranges
Membership costs: - Individual: $107/year (calendar year, Jan 1–Dec 31) - Family: $157/year (covers two adults and children under 18 in same household) - Non-members: $15 per public shoot (or $20 for the annual August fundraiser)
| Range Type | Setup | Distances |
|---|---|---|
| Flat range | Nine target butts, 42" × 36" | 10–67 yards |
| Elevated platform | Typically 6+ 3D targets | Variable |
| 3D walk-through | 20 targets, full loop format | 15–60 yards |
All ranges accept field points only. Broadheads are prohibited on member ranges. Crossbows and firearms are strictly banned on club property—there is a small public range with three target butts for non-members with crossbows only.
The main 3D course is a 3/4-mile loop with 30 Rinehart targets in excellent condition. It features: - Varying terrain with uphill and downhill shots - Four elevated shooting platforms - Distances from 15 to 60 yards - Separated from member practice ranges (used for public events only)
Monthly 30-target shoots happen normally on the first Sunday of each month, sometimes shifted to avoid holidays. In 2025, the club added Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening spotlight shoots.
August Fundraiser: The club partners with No Person Left Behind Outdoors (NPLBO) for their most popular annual shoot. This charity event raises money for disabled veterans to participate in outdoor activities. Members shoot free, but the club asks non-members to consider the $20 entry fee despite it being a charity event.
The club has maintained a waiting list for archery instruction. As of 2025, lessons are expected to launch in spring. Interested shooters should email [email protected] with their name and contact info to get on the list.
Maintaining 40 acres and three ranges is volunteer-intensive. The club encourages all members to contribute at least 6 hours per year through: - Pre-shoot workdays (setup, trimming, mowing) - Event day duties (registration, food service, teardown) - Ad hoc projects (clearing storm debris, moving target butts)
Members coordinate work directly with the club president to ensure plans align with club needs.

Members receive gate codes for the entrance lock and Porta-Potty facilities after membership is approved. The club operates under strict liability requirements—you'll need to complete the membership application, sign a liability waiver, and complete payment before being granted member status.
