Montrose Sporting Goods opened March 8, 1958, when Sylvester Janoski left the coal mines to start over. He built a reputation for knowing his customers—even if he called everyone "Smoke" for 29 years straight. Now, nearly 70 years later, his grandson Ryan runs the gunsmith shop full-time while his parents Larry and Nancy manage the store. The third and fourth generations are actively involved.

Ryan graduated from Pennsylvania Gunsmith School in 2004 and has been running the in-house gunsmith operation since. Services include:

• •Test firing before return

They repair all makes and models—you don't need to have bought from them first.

• •Hunting: Ammunition, knives, camouflaged clothing, boots, layered apparel for cold weather

• •Licenses: They issue hunting licenses and fishing licenses on-site
