High Power Rifle Matches happen the first Saturday of every month. You bring any centerfire rifle capable of rapid fire—scopes and iron sights both work. The match is 50 rounds total: standing, sitting, and prone positions with both rapid and slow fire strings. Two relay times (9 AM and 11 AM) keep lines manageable. Rules follow the NRA High Power Rifle Rule Book.
Appleseed Rifle Clinics teach fundamental rifle marksmanship rooted in American shooting heritage. These are Project Appleseed certified courses that transform shooters from intermediate to skilled marksmen. Contact [email protected] to register.
Rimfire Steel Plate Matches run the first Saturday of each month (March through November) starting at 10 AM. Four stages per match—two rifle, two pistol—all shot with .22 LR. Stages feature 5-7 steel plates at 7-25 yards. You shoot each stage 5 times, drop the slowest run. It costs $10 for ages 13+, $5 for under 12, capped at $20 per family. If you don't have a rifle or pistol, the club provides them. Limited ammo (3 boxes of 50) available for purchase. This is explicitly designed for beginners and families.
High Nooners Bullseye is an informal match every Wednesday at noon (10:30 AM in summer) on the outdoor range. All skill levels welcome. The NRA standard course is 90 rounds: slow fire (10 shots in 10 minutes), timed fire (5 shots in 20 seconds), rapid fire (5 shots in 10 seconds). You get coaching from the match leader, and it's under $5 per round. Continues through 2 PM or noon depending on season.
Practical Shooting Skills & Drills meets Monday nights 5:30 PM to sunset on the Bullseye Pistol Range. This is for people who carry or plan to carry. It's $5 per person, all skill levels welcome, and focuses on personal defense competence. Safety officers here also compete in IDPA, so instruction is combat-focused. Contact Chris Bivona (434-996-0366) or Lyn Deane-Harris (434-962-9555).
Precision Pistol Program focuses on fundamentals. Coached practice happens 1st and 3rd Wednesday nights; competition nights are 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. Both start at 7 PM at the clubhouse indoor range. Pistols up to .45 caliber allowed. Skills taught are adaptable to IDPA, IPSC, and Steel Challenge. Non-members' family can participate if an RRPC member is present. $1 for targets.
IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) matches run the 3rd Saturday of every month January through November. New shooter briefing at 8:30 AM (arrive by 8:00)—first-timers must attend. Sign in 8:30-9 AM, match briefing 9 AM. Cold range (no loaded guns until it's your turn). Match fee $15 cash or check. Average match runs 60-75 rounds. IDPA membership required after first match. Pre-register on PractiScore.
Reactive Steel is the 2nd Saturday of each month. Check-in 8 AM, briefing 8:30 AM at the Pistol Range. You shoot 3+ stages with 25-30 reactive steel targets per stage. Targets fall when hit—instant feedback. Three competition divisions: centerfire pistol with iron sights, centerfire with optics, centerfire carbines. Ammo must be common pistol cartridges (9mm, .40, .45 ACP). Strong-side holsters only. Cold range rules. $10 entry. Sign up on Practiscore.
Sunday Clay Shoots run 1:30-5 PM most Sundays. Skeet, Trap, and Wobble fields are open to members and non-members. On the 2nd Sunday, 5-Stand Sporting Clays replaces Trap. Sign up for squads first-come, first-served (members take precedence). Cost is $5 for members, $7 for non-members per round. You must bring your own shotgun and ear/eye protection. Required shot size: #7 1/2, 8, or 9 only. No instruction on Sundays—if you're new to squad shooting, attend the orientation class on the 3rd Saturday of the month (requires pre-registration).
Trap Shooting runs Wednesday 4-9 PM year-round with NRA/ATA Certified Trap Coach Mike Kreynus. Covers 16-yard Singles, Handicap (19-27 yards), and Doubles. Wednesday practice is for learning—novices welcome. RRPC also hosts ATA Registered Trap events including 300-Bird shoots, BIG50s, and Winter League. Sundays (except 2nd Sunday) trap is open to members and public 1:30-5 PM. Contact Mike Kreynus: [email protected] or 804-263-1008.
Target Archery Range is located next to the clubhouse with marked targets at 20, 30, and 40 yards. Target matches are run by NFAA guidelines. Unsanctioned matches are flexible—bring playing card targets for poker matches at 10 yards if you want. NO BROADHEADS allowed on any archery range or targets.
Archery Lessons run the 4th Sunday of each month, 12:30-1:30 PM. Two USA Archery/NFAA certified instructors teach beginners (youth age 10+ to adult). Open to non-members. $5 per group lesson. Five-lesson series earns USA Archery recognition. All equipment provided. Contact [email protected] or Peter Netland (434-249-5588, [email protected]). Director of instruction is Michael Lilly (804-922-2091, [email protected]). Women's archery coordinator is Judy Brochu-Blake ([email protected]).
3D Archery simulates hunting. 15 shooting lanes on the hill right of the road to lower ranges. You shoot foam animals from varying distances with scoring rings that match vital organ hits. Use field tips only. Don't shoot below 45 degrees to avoid target damage.
Clout Archery is a ladies' group specialty—shooting arrows at a flag on the ground from up to 140 yards. Closer to the flag = more points.
Open to all female RRPC members and spouses of male members. Monthly meetings 1:30 PM on the 2nd or 4th Sunday (depending on holidays). Leadership: Judy Levine, Kim Smalley (both NRA Certified Instructors), Jean Packard (Certified Range Safety Officer), plus several other RSOs in the group. Meetings include presentations on gun-related topics, safety discussions, shooting practice, and coaching. Email: [email protected]
RRPC sponsors youth through the Albemarle County/Charlottesville 4-H Blue Ridge Shooting Education Club (BRSEC). Certified volunteer instructors follow a nationally approved curriculum. Affiliated with American Legion Post 74 and the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). Age 9-19.
Archery is outdoor on the RRPC archery range. Rifle is typically indoor but outdoor events scheduled. Practice times: 1st & 3rd Sunday 1:30-3:30 PM (both archery and rifle), 2nd & 4th Sunday 4-6 PM (rifle only). Air rifle competitive team practices every Sunday 11:30 AM-1:30 PM.
Dues are $20 for first child, $15 second, $10 third from same family. 4-H registration required annually in October. All necessary equipment provided, but participants can bring their own (especially eye/ear protection). Kids earn NRA qualification awards (certificates, patches, pins, medals) as they progress. Parents/guardians encouraged to participate or watch. Contact [email protected] or Jim Wolfe (757) 635-3157.
Rivanna Ranger Co is RRPC's CAS affiliate, sanctioned by the Single Action Shooting Society. If you like Old West movies (Tombstone, 3:10 to Yuma), Gunsmoke, or Red Dead Redemption, this is it. Shooters evolve aliases, wear period costume, shoot reproduction correct firearms: single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever rifles, and SxS/pump/lever shotguns. Six stages per match, timed with penalties for misses and procedural errors. Matches held 2nd Saturday of the month March through December. Newbie-friendly. Website: cowboyaction.blogspot.com.
