Founded in 1934 and established on their current 40-acre property in 1940, Northland Sportsmen's Club operates as a non-profit, family-oriented facility run entirely by volunteers. Located outside Gaylord near West Otsego Lake, they're an NRA affiliate and member of Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan Coalition For Responsible Gun Ownership.
Northland has built out serious infrastructure for competitive and recreational shooting:
Outdoor Ranges: - Rifle Range (#3): Covered firing line with benches, 50 and 100-yard targets - Pistol Range (#2): Covered firing line with benches, 7/25/50-yard targets - Bowling Pin Range (#1): Covered firing line, 25 feet—dedicated pin shoot setup - Ranges #4, #5, #6: Mix of covered and open firing lines, 7-50 yard distances - Defensive Ranges (#7, #8, #9): For tactical shooting courses - Archery Range: Separate facility for bow shooters - Shotgun Range: Trap, skeet, and five-stand setup
Indoor Facilities: - Indoor .22 Range: 50-foot distance, late fall and winter season

Shotgun range is open to the public Tuesdays and Fridays, 4:30–8pm year-round. No membership required for trap, skeet, or five-stand—range fees apply.
Beyond competitive events, they offer: - Civilian Marksmanship Program for junior shooters - Hunter safety courses - Women On Target educational clinics - Ice fishing derby (winter activity)
Cost: $120/year
Requirements: - New members must attend a mandatory club orientation and safety meeting before receiving their card - Membership meetings held first Thursday of each month at 7:30pm - Board meetings first Thursday at 6:30pm—open to members
Member Privileges: - Access to all outdoor ranges (except during law enforcement scheduled times) - Exclusive use of ranges except during public events - Ability to bring guests (members are responsible for guests) - Participation in members-only events like Wednesday pin shoots
Law enforcement uses Ranges #2 and #3 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Check their online calendar before heading out—other ranges remain open for member use on those days.
They enforce strict NRA-based safety rules: - Carry guns must remain holstered except on designated firing lines - No alcohol or drug use - Firearms brought cased and unloaded; loaded on firing line only - No crossfire on targets - Target changers get an all-clear before going downrange - No tracer, incendiary, or signal ammunition - Cleanup required before leaving - Metal targets minimum 40 feet away - No shooting after 10pm without written permission - Range hours sunrise to sunset (check calendar for scheduled closures)
The club enforces a family-friendly code of conduct: no obscenity, harassment, discrimination, or bullying. Members act as ambassadors for the club.
